From
packages provided by nature to the use of complex materials and techniques,
packaging has evolved in various ways. Several factors contributed to this
change, especially the requirements and concerns of people, competition in the
market, unusual events and accidental experiments, shifting lifestyles, etc.
There are different materials used for packaging of various items like glass,
paper, metal, etc. out of which plastic is considered one of the newest packaging
items. The word Plastic means pliable and easily molded. Plastic packaging
became very popular in very little time due to its versatility and the
unlimited advantages it offered.
Following
is the brief timeline of the evolvement of plastic:
1862
It all
began in 1862 when Alexander Parkes discovered the first plastic material that
was made by man. He introduced this bio-based material during an International
exhibition held in London. It was called the Parkesine, which was composed of
cellulose. This plastic material became very popular at that time because it
could easily be shaped when it was heated and, after cooling down, retained
into its shape. It was a cool invention that leads to the packaging of
different products.
The 1990s
A Swiss
textile engineer named Dr. Jacques Edwin Branden Berger invented a plastic wrap
called the Cellophane. This layer of packaging was the first waterproof and
fully flexible plastic
that
was excellent to keep the products safe and secure.
1930
In
1930, a Scotch cellulose tape was invented by an engineer Richard Drew. It was
an outstanding invention in the packaging industry as it helped in providing
excellent protection to the packed products. Bakers and grocers used this tape
for packing the good items for a good presentation.
1933
In
1933, Ralph Wiley invented an exceptional plastic, Polyvinylidene chloride that
was used to pack and protect different military equipment. This flexible
plastic wrap was also used for the packaging of food items.
1946
Airtight
plastic containers were invented in 1946 that protected the food from dust,
dirt, microorganisms, and all the external factors that can spoil the food. The
first plastic spray bottle was also invented in the same year by Dr. Jules.
The 1950s
In
1950, plastic garbage bags were created, which were very durable, and there was
no fear of tearing. In 1954, the first zipper-storage bags were invented.
The Present
Plastic
packaging is the most versatile option for the packaging of any item, as it
could be molded in several ways. The Plastic packaging suppliers are
providing only the high-quality of these packages since the beginning. These
packages are also the most cost-effective items, which is why they are utilized
all over the globe.
